Henry Cavill
is attempting to shed some light on the recent storm of controversy and speculation regarding his mustache.

Earlier this week, the internet went wild following a report that Cavill's facial hair -- which he grew out for his role in Mission: Impossible 6 -- was causing problems when it came to reshooting scenes for Justice League, in which he plays the clean-cut Superman.

"Dear followers, it is time to finally set the record straight in this moustache fiasco," Cavill wrote below a photo of some elaborate, frightening contraption. "Pictured above, is not a set on MI6 but is in fact the latest in a series of weapons being designed by Warner Bros and Paramount Studios to combat the entity known as 'Henry Cavill's Moustache.'"

"There has been no discussion over whether to shave or not to shave for the JL reshoots, simply a relentless campaign to put an end to the seemingly inexorable conquest of this despotic 'stache," he continued, mocking the so-called controversy his facial hair has ignited. "It is not a question of IF I should shave - it is a question of how can we possibly be victorious against such a beast without bringing our own doom raining down upon us. #MI6 #JusticeLeague #HenryCavillsMoustache #HopeIsAllWeHaveLeft #MoustacheImpossible."

All the trouble reportedly began when Cavill had to grow his mustache for his role in Mission: Impossible 6, which was supposed to wrap before Justice League reshoots began. However, scheduling conflicts have forced the 34-year-old star to work on both films simultaneously.

Variety
reports that Paramount refused to allow Cavill to shave -- presumably for fear that it could cause future delays in the production of M:I6 -- and Warner Bros. will therefore have to digitally remove the actor's mustache in post-production, which could cost a sizable sum.

Recently, Cavill has had his scruff on full display while undergoing physical therapy for his knee. The star shared a number of videos to Instagram documenting his "road to recovery." Check out the video below to see more.
