Will & Grace
creators were met with immeasurable excitement when NBC announced the sitcom would return for a 12-episode run in 2017 -- and one big question.

The 2006 series finale included a time-jump 20 years into the future, where former best friends Will (Eric McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing) haven't spoken for two decades before reuniting as their children move into the same college dorm. With the reboot set just 11 years later, how exactly is the revival going to work?

In a new interview withE! News, Will & Grace co-creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan addressed the time-jump question, telling fans to "keep scratching" their heads.

"We've just come out of a story camp that lasted about three months. That's where we break and write all of the episodes that we will be filming in August or whenever we start," Mutchnick said. "I will tell you that almost more than anything, more time went into figuring out how are we going to reintroduce the show and what were the rules going to be and how were we going to address that finale."

"And where are they in their lives," Kohan added.

"We can tell you this much: They are very much living in that apartment in 2017 in the month of September, on the 28th of September at 9 o'clock," Mutchnick offered. "That's when you're going to meet up with them again and they are going to explain to you exactly what happened so you know the rules moving forward and you won't feel like anything is left open."

ET caught up with Messing last month, where she dished on why she and her castmates, McCormack, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes, agreed to give the show another go.

"The four of us had dinner together and were like, 'What do we think?' Ultimately we thought we need to laugh and we need to make people laugh, because this has been a rough year -- and we have a lot to say about it, but we also make you think," she said.

"It's just a testament to how close a family we were -- and the chance to come back for this little sprint and, just to play again, especially now when there is so much to talk about with what’s happening in our country. I'm just excited,” Messing continued. "I'm excited to laugh. I'm excited to make people laugh and I know I feel hungry for that."

Will & Grace
returns Thursday, Sept. 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
